Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a horrible disease that attacks the myelin sheath of the brain's neurons. MS management involves drugs to reduce MS symptoms.

There are a number of disabilities that may affect one’s ability to walk, yet there are probably none so extensive in symptoms as multiple sclerosis (MS). This disease, which is also known as disseminated sclerosis or encephalomyelitis disseminata, is a condition that affects the myelin sheaths which coat the neurons in the brain.

Myelin sheaths are the fatty substances that surround all the billions of neurons in the human body. They help speed up the transfer of information from neuron to neuron, enabling the body to function at an optimum level. Such a process is called myelination.

However, in the case of multiple sclerosis, the myelin sheaths of many of the brain neurons are gradually and systematically destroyed. The reduced transfer of information from neuron to neuron is called demyelination. A lot of highly unpleasant symptoms are produced as a result. Since there is no known cure of multiple sclerosis, treatment is aimed at managing existing MS symptoms.

Multiple Sclerosis Symptoms

There is a vast range of MS symptoms. Remember that the condition itself affects the neurons of the brain. Therefore, the person suffering from multiple sclerosis can expect to experience any symptom with a neurological basis. That is, one may experience changes in or loss of sensation, speaking difficulties, problems with balance and general coordination, trouble swallowing, and problems with visual perception.

MS patients generally suffer cognitive impairment, mood disorders, fatigue, muscular weakness, muscle spasms, chronic pain and depression. The symptoms of MS aren’t normally constant; they tend to appear in a series of episodes or relapses.

Multiple Sclerosis Treatment

There is simply no known cure for multiple sclerosis. Treatment for multiple sclerosis is about managing the symptoms of MS and doing whatever is necessary to ameliorate the advancement of the disease. This is done through two main types of therapeutic drugs.

The first type of therapeutic drug used for MS management is immunotherapy. These meds are designed to alter the working of the immune system, thereby stalling further attacks to the myelin sheaths.

The second type of therapeutic drugs used for MS management is corticosteroids. These meds are taken either orally or intravenously (injection). They are intended to slow down a resurgent onset of MS symptoms.

Multiple Sclerosis Symptoms and Management

As discussed, multiple sclerosis is a highly unpleasant and extremely painful medical condition with a significant repertoire of symptoms. It cannot be completely cured but symptoms of MS can be managed by therapeutic drugs.

The medications used in MS management may produce flu-like symptoms and can increase the risk of heart attack.
